Postdoc KRANOS and DECAL Projekt

Remuneration Group 13 | Limited: 3 years | Starting date: 01.12.2024 | ID: APPO014/2024 | Deadline: 11.09.2024 | Full-time/Part-time | Remote work possible

DESY, with more than 3000 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world’s leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and
function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing
science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive
working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

The ATLAS Group at Zeuthen is working on detector R&D for future experiments (DECAL) and also on technology transfer into other fields like for example medicine (KRANOS). We are
looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join the DECAL and KRANOS teams and to work in close collaboration with Innovation & Technology Transfer and
Humboldt-University of Berlin.

Within the DECAL project we are developing a digital calorimeter for future particle physics experiments that is based on silicon technology that will withstand the high rates and high
radiation environments. We are currently focusing on monolithic active pixel sensor (MAPS).

KRANOS aims to develop a novel, completely non-invasive highly-portable low-cost brain damage detection system based on the detection of the potassium distribution in the brain.

About your role:

  • Geant-4 and C++ based software development of prototype simulations of the detector
  • Monte Carlo simulation of the physics in detectors
  • Detector design development (geometry, hardware components, cost-effectiveness) algorithms development for imaging reconstruction and tracking of particles and energy
    measurements
  • Algorithm development for imaging reconstruction and tracking and energy reconstruction
  • Strategic and conceptional work for the transfer of the technology to the market
  • Laboratory work
  • Plan and execute test beam measurements
  • Giving presentations and writing of reports
  • Help with funding applications
  • Supervision of students

Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to
us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile
work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded
employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the
regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket (Deutschland-Ticket) at both locations.

Limited: 3 years

About you:

  • Ph.D. in experimental particle or astro-particle physics preferentially in detector development
  • Experience in particle or astro-particle physics detector R&D
  • Experience in silicon based detectors and especially MAPS
  • Good knowledge of C++ and montecarlo simulation methods. Geant-4 knowledge is an advantage.
  • Good understanding of particle detectors systems especially MAPS
  • Good skills in data analysis are an advantage.
  • Ideally, experience in interdisciplinary work and cooperation with scientific or industrial partners
  • Strong motivation, excellent research independence, excellent knowledge of English
  • Strong team-work and inter-personal communications skills
